How I test and review software

Updated

The reviews on this site follow one process. It exists so you can tell what is first-hand experience, what comes from the vendor, and what might have changed since I wrote it.

Hands-on or vendor-sourced

Each review says which one it is.

  • Hands-on means I have used the tool on real work: running the reports, setting up the projects, living with the limits. Only these reviews use phrases like “I tested” or “in my workflow.”
  • Vendor-sourced means I have not used the tool myself. Those reviews rely on the vendor’s documentation, pricing pages and changelog, and they never pretend otherwise.

What I look at

For every tool, I cover the same ground so reviews stay comparable:

  1. The core job. Does it do the main thing it is bought for, and how well?
  2. Data quality. Where the numbers come from and how far to trust them.
  3. Workflow. How long common tasks take, and what gets in the way.
  4. Limits and pricing. What each plan actually includes, and where you hit the ceiling.
  5. Who it is for. Every verdict names who should use it and who should skip it.

How roundups and alternatives work

A “best X for Y” roundup starts from the job, not the tool list. I pick the criteria that matter for that job first, then judge every tool against them. An alternatives page starts from the reasons people leave a tool, and each pick says what you gain and what you give up by switching.

Pricing and freshness

Software pricing changes often. Every price on this site carries an “as of” month, checked against the vendor’s own pricing page when I publish or update a review. If you spot one that is out of date, tell me and I will fix it.

Corrections

If something is wrong, email [email protected] and I will correct it and note the update date on the page.

Conflicts of interest

I own LinkBoss, an internal linking tool, and any page that mentions it says so. Anything else that could affect a review is covered in the disclosure policy.
